My mom is a very interesting character and one of my best friends. She helped me tremendously with finances when I was in the hospital and was gradually letting me pay her back. She was very grateful to Wifey and Peter for staying with me in Mexico. At that time my brother made a nice gesture and offered to bring Mom with him to Mexico to take care of me. I said it was not necessary because Peter, my new love would do it. My thought was, This would be too many people and way too expensive because three people cannot stay in my room. Peter was completely a new concept to them since I had not been in a relationship for quite some time. Needless to say, Mom was excited to finally meet him in person.

Mom, Liz, has been a community activist most of her life. Her main profession was a social worker as the Housing Authority’s Director of Social Services Apartment Management. Among her many projects for the community, she brought Planned Parenthood to Roanoke and was acting president for several years. At the time of this writing she still volunteered as a counselor at the clinic. She is a member of the Sister Cities program and as a result has had many interesting foreign guests stay in her lovely large brick gumwood colonial home. She loves company and on occasion rents rooms or just has visitors. Liz is a dynamic, youthful, artistic musician, 82 going on 62. She is a jazz pianist and still has her own gigs. All her body parts are still intact; she doesn’t take medications and for the most part is not in any pain. It took years for her to let me carry her luggage at the airport. I think she’s finally okay with it now. She’s lovely, fun, humorous and likes her martini. Liz would say her health and longevity secret is M & M’s (music and martinis). I hope she doesn’t mind my description here. Love you, Mom!

I will never forget my trip to Greece with Mom the spring of 1997. I was 41, the youngest of our tourist group; everyone else was 70 and over. We teased the heck out of each other in front of our tour guide and the group. Mom kept telling everyone I was a great belly dancer and of course I was expected to entertain. I would tell everyone she was a great jazz pianist and she would cower and get embarrassed because she was expected to entertain as well.

The night I was not expecting to perform I became very sick with a terrible cold. As I entered the restaurant there was live Middle Eastern music playing and our guide picked me up and plopped me on top of a table to dance. I felt like death warmed over, but no one knew. I danced my jig and was off the table in no time. I received many compliments and requests for belly dance lessons.
